Chandauli, August 22 (TNA) Three people died, and one was left critically injured after being exposed to poisonous gas inside a well in Uttar Pradesh’s Chandauli district on Saturday, in an incident that turned a routine effort to retrieve a submersible pump into a fatal tragedy.
The accident took place in Kidahira village under the Shahabganj police station area, where four people had gone down into a closed well to remove a faulty submersible pump that had got stuck inside.
According to local reports, one person entered the well after another, but all of them were overcome by toxic gas and collapsed inside the structure. With the help of villagers and police, all four were pulled out and rushed to hospital, where doctors declared three of them dead.
The fourth victim remains in serious condition and is under treatment. The mishap occurred around 2:30 pm and is believed to have been caused by poisonous gas accumulated inside the shut well, possibly methane or carbon monoxide.
Reports said the men had entered the well without proper safety equipment, which made the situation even more dangerous. Police have taken custody of the bodies and started further legal and administrative proceedings.
