Lucknow, August 22 (TNA) BSP chief Mayawati on Saturday came out in support of RLD leader and Union minister Jayant Chaudhary, while launching a sharp attack on Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav over his “chavanni se rupaya” remark.

In a post on X, Mayawati said it was “shameful” for the SP chief to make such a public statement about his former ally and demanded that he apologise to the entire Jat community.

She said Akhilesh Yadav’s comment about the Rashtriya Lok Dal and its leader was “improper, objectionable and highly shameful,” and added that he should apologise not only to Jayant Chaudhary and RLD but also to the family of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh.

Mayawati further alleged that the SP’s political conduct has often been marked by “narrow-mindedness” and caste-based bias, saying such behaviour has repeatedly benefited the BJP while weakening secular forces.

Political flashpoint

The controversy began after Akhilesh Yadav’s remark comparing a political ally’s rise to “chavanni se rupaya,” which drew backlash from Mayawati and sharpened tensions among opposition parties in Uttar Pradesh.

Mayawati’s intervention is significant because it places the BSP chief publicly on Jayant Chaudhary’s side and adds fresh pressure on the SP at a time when alliance politics in the state remain sensitive.
