Lucknow, October 28 (TNA) The Bharatiya Janata Party has won four of the 11 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council seats contested, while the Samajwadi Party has secured one seat as counting continues in the remaining constituencies.
The BJP victories include the Lucknow Teachers’, Bareilly-Moradabad Teachers’, Meerut Graduates’ and Meerut Teachers’ constituencies. The Samajwadi Party retained the Varanasi Teachers’ seat, where sitting MLC Lal Bihari Yadav defeated BJP candidate Dr Pramod Kumar Mishra.
Key Winners
BJP candidates who have won so far include Umesh Dwivedi from the Lucknow Teachers’ constituency, Dr Hari Singh Dhillon from Bareilly-Moradabad, Dinesh Kumar Goyal from Meerut Graduates and Shri Chand Sharma from Meerut Teachers.
In Varanasi, SP candidate Lal Bihari Yadav retained the Teachers’ seat, defeating the BJP nominee. The result gave the Samajwadi Party a significant boost in a contest largely framed as a direct BJP–SP battle.
Counting Underway
Polling was held for 11 seats, comprising five Graduates’ constituencies and six Teachers’ constituencies. The seats include Lucknow, Varanasi, Agra, Meerut and Allahabad-Jhansi among the Graduates’ constituencies, and Lucknow, Varanasi, Agra, Meerut, Bareilly-Moradabad and Gorakhpur-Faizabad among the Teachers’ constituencies.
Counting is continuing at designated centres amid tight security. Results for the remaining seats, including Gorakhpur-Faizabad, Agra and Allahabad-Jhansi, are expected as the counting process progresses.
Political Significance
The results are being watched closely ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. The BJP’s performance in the Council polls will be viewed as an indicator of its organisational strength, while the SP will seek to build on its victory in Varanasi.
Officials and political parties have reported disputes over counting procedures and ballot validity at some centres, but the Election Commission is continuing the process under security arrangements.
