World map officially changed after 457 years; UN adopts new projection as US stands alone in opposition

New York, September 5 (TNA) For the first time in nearly 457 years, the world’s official map has been changed, with the United Nations General Assembly adopting a new global projection that more accurately represents the true sizes of continents, especially Africa, while the United States emerged as the only country to vote against the move.

What changed and why it matters

The new map, based on the “Equal Earth Projection”, was approved in a landmark UN vote that saw 164 member states supporting the resolution, with only the US opposing it and several others abstaining.  The resolution effectively replaces the long-dominant Mercator projection-created by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569-with a more area-accurate representation that corrects historical distortions that made regions near the poles appear much larger than they actually are, while shrinking equatorial regions like Africa.

Under the Mercator map, Greenland and parts of Europe and North America appeared disproportionately large, while Africa’s actual landmass—about 30.37 million square kilometres, roughly 14 times larger than Greenland—was visually minimised.  The Equal Earth Projection, developed in 2018, preserves relative area while still offering a rectangular world map suitable for classrooms, offices and digital platforms, making it both scientifically more accurate and practically usable.

Why Africa is celebrating, and why the US objected

African nations have welcomed the change as a symbolic and practical correction of a centuries-old cartographic bias that they say reinforced colonial-era perceptions of the continent as smaller and less significant.  By showing Africa at its true scale relative to other continents, supporters argue the new map promotes a more balanced global worldview and counters ingrained misconceptions about the continent’s size, resources and geopolitical weight.

In contrast, the United States argued against the shift, with its UN representative stating that the move undermines established navigation standards and could create confusion in education, logistics and maritime operations that have relied on the Mercator system for centuries.  Washington also expressed concern that changing such a widely used reference could have unintended consequences for global mapping systems, GPS interfaces and international agreements that reference geographic data.

India’s position and the broader push for change

India voted in favour of the resolution, aligning itself with the majority of UN members, including France, the UK, Russia and most African, Asian and Latin American countries.  New Delhi’s support reflects a broader diplomatic stance in favour of multilateral efforts to correct historical inequities and promote more inclusive global narratives, particularly those that enhance the visibility and accurate representation of developing regions.

The campaign to replace the Mercator projection gained momentum after the African Union (AU) formally endorsed the Equal Earth Projection as a more truthful depiction of the continent’s geography.  Proponents highlighted that while Mercator was designed for 16th-century sea navigation-preserving angles and directions at the expense of area accuracy-it is ill-suited for modern educational and policy purposes where proportional representation matters more than navigational precision.

What happens next

Following the UN’s endorsement, member states and international organisations are now expected to gradually adopt the Equal Earth Projection in official publications, educational materials and digital mapping platforms. The UN Secretariat has indicated that updated world maps reflecting the new standard will be displayed across UN premises and used in official communications, while encouraging schools, media houses and tech companies to follow suit.

While the Mercator projection will not disappear overnight-especially in navigation and certain technical applications-its status as the default “world map” in classrooms and general use is likely to diminish over time.  For many in Africa and the Global South, the change is being hailed not just as a cartographic update, but as a long-overdue correction of a visual legacy that shaped how generations perceived the world’s geography and power dynamics.
