Washington, November 3 (TNA) The United States has carried out what officials described as “defensive strikes” against Iranian targets on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, following an alleged Iranian attack on a U.S. aircraft.

A U.S. official said Iranian forces using surface-to-air missiles against American assets were targeted in the operation. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to comment publicly.

Explosions Reported

Several explosions were reported on Qeshm Island, a strategically located Iranian island near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian state media confirmed that blasts were heard in the area, while witnesses reportedly saw aircraft flying over the island.

The Wall Street Journal, citing U.S. officials, reported that the strikes were intended to limit Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping in the strategic waterway. Officials described the action as limited and defensive rather than the start of a broader military campaign.

Tensions Rise in Strait

The incident has increased tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy corridors. Any further military escalation could threaten commercial shipping and disrupt oil supplies, prompting a rise in crude prices in early Asian trading.

The United States has not publicly released details about the aircraft involved, the weapons used or the extent of damage caused by the strikes. Iran has also not issued a detailed official account of the reported confrontation.

International Concern

The latest exchange comes amid heightened military tensions between Washington and Tehran. Regional governments and shipping operators are closely monitoring the situation, while commercial vessels have been advised to exercise caution in and around the Strait of Hormuz.

Further developments are expected as U.S. and Iranian authorities issue official statements on the incident. Independent verification of the reported damage and casualties was not immediately available.
