US President Donald Trump has lauded India’s electoral system, highlighting its mandatory photo voter ID requirement, and used it to renew his push for stricter election laws in the United States through the proposed SAVE America Act. In a post on Truth Social, Trump recalled a recent conversation with India’s Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, who reportedly asked the US administration: “How can you have elections in the US without a valid photo ID?” Trump cited India’s last general election, in which he said 646 million voters participated, with less than 1% voting by mail, and stressed that “every single voter had to have a valid photo identity document”.
