New York, September 27 (TNA) Russia on Saturday threw its support behind India’s long-pending bid for permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov saying that reform of the council should reflect the interests of Asia, Africa and Latin America.
Addressing the general debate of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, Lavrov said Moscow supports the candidatures of both India and Brazil for permanent seats on the council. He said the Security Council should not allocate additional permanent seats to Western countries, naming Germany and Japan in his remarks.
“We are in favour of broadening the representation of Asia, Africa and Latin America. We support Brazil’s and India’s candidatures for a permanent seat,” Lavrov said, according to reports. He also argued that any reform must preserve the prerogatives of the council’s existing permanent members.
Russia’s endorsement is significant because India has been pressing for a restructured and more representative Security Council for years, alongside other major Global South powers. Lavrov’s remarks renewed the diplomatic push for wider representation from developing regions at the world body.
