Kathmandu, September 27 (TNA) At least 21 people have died, and five remain missing after torrential rain triggered floods, landslides, lightning strikes and windstorms across Nepal, officials said. Five others were injured in the weather-related incidents.
The disaster has affected several districts, including Myagdi, Dolpa, Dhanusha, Palpa, Baglung, Lamjung, Rukum West, Kavre, Dhading, Makwanpur and Surkhet. A total of 439 monsoon-related incidents have been reported nationwide.
Security forces have been deployed for search-and-rescue operations, evacuation, and temporary shelter. The government has also announced free medical treatment for the five injured people.
Heavy rain and landslides have disrupted road and power networks.
More than a dozen road sections linking Kathmandu-including the Prithvi Highway, BP Highway and Kanti Lokpath-have been blocked or damaged. Floodwaters swept away a concrete bridge over the Kali Gandaki River, while roads along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers were damaged. The East-West Highway was also temporarily closed, officials said.
Electricity supply of more than 1,000 megawatts was disrupted after transmission towers collapsed or power lines were shut as a precaution. Cross-border movement at the Gaddachowki point on the Nepal-India border was halted due to rising water levels in the Mahakali River.
Authorities have urged people to avoid non-essential travel, remain alert near rivers and steep slopes, and follow official advisories as rescue and restoration operations continue.
