Kathmandu, September 9 (TNA) A magnitude-5.3 earthquake struck Nepal’s northwestern Mustang district on Tuesday night, with tremors felt in adjoining districts, officials said. The quake hit at around 9.53 pm, with its epicentre near Lomanthang in Mustang, about 375 km northwest of Kathmandu, according to the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage following the tremor, which was also felt in Manang, Dolpa and Myagdi districts, authorities said. The shaking came just days after catastrophic flash floods and landslides devastated parts of the Nepal–Tibet border region, killing more than 1,300 people and leaving thousands missing, heightening anxiety among residents already coping with one of the country’s deadliest disasters since the 2015 earthquake.
Separately, a magnitude-5.0 tremor was recorded late Tuesday in another part of Nepal at a depth of 143 km, with the epicentre in the central region, but again no immediate damage or casualty reports emerged. A third tremor, magnitude-5.3, was reported in Tibet at a depth of 35 km, with tremors felt across the border in Nepal, adding to the sense of alarm in flood-affected communities.
Seismologists say the Himalayan region remains highly active tectonically, and the recent sequence of quakes and floods has put additional strain on infrastructure and emergency response systems in Nepal.
