New Delhi, November 4 (TNA) Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms has won Georgia’s gubernatorial election, becoming the first Black woman elected governor of a US state and the first woman to hold the office in Georgia. Her victory also flipped the governor’s office to the Democrats after more than two decades of Republican control.

The former Atlanta mayor defeated Republican businessman Rick Jackson in the closely watched contest. The Associated Press and major US networks projected Bottoms as the winner, marking a significant Democratic breakthrough in the battleground state.

Historic Victory

Bottoms, 56, becomes the first Black woman to serve as a governor anywhere in the United States. She is also the first Black person elected governor of Georgia and the first Democrat to win the state’s top office in more than 20 years.

Addressing supporters in Atlanta, Bottoms said her victory belonged to all Georgians, regardless of how they voted. She pledged to govern the entire state and put Georgia’s interests first.

Pledge on Foster Care

Bottoms said she had spoken with Jackson after the election and that the two had agreed to continue supporting foster children across Georgia. The issue was a notable point of overlap between the candidates during the campaign.

Her victory speech also acknowledged the historic significance of the result and the generations of Georgians whose struggles helped make the breakthrough possible. Bottoms said she would work to bring people together despite the state’s political divisions.

Democratic Gains

The result gives Democrats control of the governorship in one of the country’s most closely divided states. It also places Bottoms at the centre of national attention as the first Black woman to lead a US state government.

Jackson conceded after the race was called in Bottoms’ favour. The new governor-elect is expected to focus on education, healthcare, public safety and foster-care services when she takes office.
