Astana, August 24 (TNA) Kazakhstan’s pro-presidential Adilet party has won a sweeping victory in Sunday’s parliamentary election, according to exit polls. The pro-Tokayev Adilet party won around 70–72% of the vote, strengthening President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s hold on power and securing most seats in the 145-member parliament.
The electoral commission reported voter turnout at 74.19%, with participation reaching as high as 90% in some regions. Only seven state-approved parties contested Sunday’s election, with genuine opposition groups banned.
Kazakhstan adopted a new constitution in March, replacing the Senate with a more powerful single-chamber parliament called the Kurultai. The former Soviet republic is an ally of Russia and maintains close ties with China.
