Lucknow, September 23 (TNA) The Samajwadi Party has appointed Mohammad Jasmeer Ansari as the new Leader of the Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council. Party president and former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav approved his appointment.
The decision marks a change in the Samajwadi Party’s leadership in the Upper House of the state legislature. Ansari is an SP MLC from Sitapur and has previously served as the party’s Deputy Leader in the Legislative Council.
Ansari’s appointment comes as the party seeks to strengthen its coordination and floor strategy in the Council. He is expected to lead the opposition on key issues, including governance, law and order, development and public welfare.
The SP had earlier appointed Lal Bihari Yadav as Leader of the Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council, while Jasmeer Ansari was made Deputy Leader in July 2024.
With the latest change, the party has placed Ansari at the centre of its Legislative Council strategy under Akhilesh Yadav’s leadership. The appointment is also expected to further consolidate the party’s representation among minority and backward communities in Uttar Pradesh.
