Mirzapur, October 14 (TNA) Former IAS officer Divya Mittal has announced that she will contest the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election from the Mirzapur Sadar constituency under the banner of her newly formed Janata Shakti Party.

Mittal, who previously served as the District Magistrate of Mirzapur, resigned from the Indian Administrative Service in August before announcing her decision to enter politics. She had said that she would begin her political journey from Uttar Pradesh.

The announcement marks Mittal’s formal entry into electoral politics and is expected to add a new dimension to the contest in Mirzapur Sadar. The constituency is considered politically significant and has a sizeable Vaishya electorate, which is seen as one factor behind her choice of seat.

Mittal’s new political outfit has been named the Janata Shakti Party. She is expected to campaign on issues related to development, governance, employment and public service, drawing on her administrative experience.

The former bureaucrat’s entry comes months ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Her candidature could lead to a triangular or multi-cornered contest, depending on the candidates fielded by the BJP-led NDA, the Samajwadi Party, the Congress and other parties.

Political observers said that while Mittal may enjoy recognition from her tenure as Mirzapur’s district magistrate, winning the seat will require support across communities. Analysts have noted that she would need to attract voters beyond the Vaishya community, including Brahmin, Yadav, Bind, Nishad, Muslim and other social groups.

The ruling alliance is expected to face the impact of the new political formation in the constituency, particularly if the Janata Shakti Party succeeds in consolidating local support. The final electoral equation will become clearer after the major parties announce their candidates and campaign strategies.

Mittal’s resignation from the IAS and subsequent decision to form a political party have already drawn attention in Uttar Pradesh. Her decision to contest from Mirzapur Sadar now sets the stage for a closely watched electoral battle in the district.
