Mathura, October 7 (TNA) Four students died, and another was critically injured after they entered an underground water tank to clean it at a residential Sanskrit gurukulam in Vrindavan, Mathura, late Tuesday night, with officials suspecting exposure to toxic gas inside the tank. The incident took place at Panini Sanskrit Gurukulam in Chaitanya Vihar, where students reportedly went into the tank after a foul smell was noticed.

According to reports, one student first lost consciousness inside the nearly 12-foot-deep tank, after which four others entered in an attempt to rescue him, but all five were trapped in the process. The students were eventually pulled out and rushed to hospital, where four were declared dead.

The deceased were identified as Manu Katare, 22, Vishu Sharma, 19, Aryan Pandey, 16, and Devansh Sharma, 17, while the fifth student, Rudraksh, survived and is undergoing treatment. District officials have ordered a magisterial inquiry to determine how the incident occurred and whether the gurukulam had the required recognition.
