Colombo, August 23 (TNA) India captain Shubman Gill on Sunday completed 3,000 runs in Test cricket during the first day of the second Test against Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo, becoming the 28th Indian batter to achieve the feat.  Gill reached the landmark while batting unbeaten on 13 at the end of the first session, finishing the day with his side in a strong position.

Career snapshot at the milestone

At the time of reaching 3,000 runs, Gill had played 43 Tests, scoring 3,004 runs in 77 innings at an average of 43.53 and a strike rate of 61.59, with 11 centuries and eight fifties; his highest Test score is 269.  Among all Indian Test run-scorers, he currently sits 28th on the list of batters with 3,000 or more runs.

Fourth-youngest Indian to 3,000 Test runs

Gill achieved the milestone at 26 years and 349 days, making him the fourth-youngest Indian to cross 3,000 Test runs.  The three Indians who reached the mark at a younger age are:

• Sachin Tendulkar – 23 years, 228 days
• Virender Sehwag – 26 years, 157 days
• Dilip Vengsarkar – 26 years, 263 days
Gill is just ahead of Kapil Dev (26 years, 356 days) on this “youngest to 3,000” list.

The milestone came in the series-deciding second Test in Colombo, where India were looking to seal the series after the first match.  Gill’s knock helped India build a solid first-innings total, with reports noting the team at 88/2 at lunch and later 116/2 after 34 overs on Day 1.

Place among current Indian players

With this achievement, Gill joins an elite group of Indian batters, and among current players he is in the company of names like KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant, who are also part of the 3,000-run club in Tests.  Given his age and role as India’s Test and ODI captain, he is well placed to climb higher on the all-time Indian Test run-scoring list in the coming years.
