National Space Day: How India Has Quietly Become a Serious Space Power

New Delhi, August 23 (TNA) As India marks National Space Day on August 23- commemorating Chandrayaan-3's historic lunar south pole landing three years ago-the occasion offers a moment to step back and assess just how far the country's space programme has travelled. What was once a story of frugal engineering and modest ambition has, over the past decade, evolved into something considerably larger: a multi-pronged national capability spanning lunar exploration, human spaceflight, satellite diplomacy and a rapidly expanding private space economy.

From a Single Landmark to a Sustained Trajectory

Chandrayaan-3's 2023 landing made India only the fourth country to achieve a soft lunar touchdown, and the first to do so near the Moon's south pole-a technically demanding feat given the region's rugged terrain and extreme lighting conditions. That single achievement earned August 23 its place on India's scientific calendar. But by 2026, the story has moved well beyond that one moment. India's space ambitions have expanded from robotic exploration to a far more complex proposition: sustaining human presence in orbit.

That shift became tangible in 2025, when Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla flew to the International Space Station aboard the Axiom-4 mission, becoming the first Indian to travel to the ISS. The mission was widely seen as more than symbolic-it provided ISRO with direct, practical experience relevant to Gaganyaan, India's own human spaceflight programme, feeding into work on crew safety systems, life support, emergency escape protocols and re-entry technology.

Gaganyaan: The Big Test Ahead

Gaganyaan remains the centrepiece of India's near-term space ambitions. ISRO has been steadily working through an extensive testing regimen; by mid-2025, around 80 per cent of the roughly 10,000 tests required for the mission had been completed, according to ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan. The agency has since carried out successful hot tests of the Gaganyaan Service Module Propulsion System and an integrated air-drop test, among other milestones.

The first uncrewed Gaganyaan flight-carrying the half-humanoid robot Vyommitra to validate systems such as the Environmental Control and Life Support System, thermal protection and deceleration mechanisms-is slated for later this year, setting the stage for an eventual crewed mission. Beyond Gaganyaan itself, ISRO has articulated a longer horizon: a Bhartiya Antariksh Station (Indian Space Station), envisaged as a modular facility with five modules, intended to give India sustained, sovereign access to low-Earth orbit for scientific research and technology demonstration.

A Private Sector That Barely Existed a Decade Ago

Perhaps the most striking shift is one that gets less attention than rocket launches: the emergence of a genuine commercial space ecosystem. India had a single space startup in 2014; by February 2026, that number had grown to more than 400. This is not incidental growth-it reflects a deliberate policy architecture built around two institutions: IN-SPACe, which facilitates and authorises private-sector space activity through a single-window mechanism, and NSIL, which commercialises ISRO's own technologies, launch services and satellite capabilities.

The numbers bear out the shift. NSIL's revenues rose from ₹321.77 crore in FY 2021-22 to ₹3,246.09 crore in FY 2024-25-a nearly tenfold increase in three years. By January 2026, IN-SPACe had facilitated 71 technology transfers from ISRO to private industry and startups, while six Indian private companies had already launched 18 satellites of their own, with 25 additional payloads flown or scheduled aboard ISRO's PSLV Orbital Experimental Module platform.

Private players such as Skyroot Aerospace are now preparing to send India's first privately built rocket to low-Earth orbit, while Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is set to conduct the first commercial launch of ISRO's newly developed Small Satellite Launch Vehicle.

Space as Diplomacy

India's space programme has also become an instrument of foreign policy and economic leverage. ISRO launched just 35 foreign satellites in the two decades before 2014; in the twelve years since, that figure has jumped to 399. India has now signed more than 300 space cooperation agreements with 61 countries and five multilateral organisations, spanning satellite missions, data-sharing arrangements, ground stations and joint scientific research. The launch of a large private US communications satellite aboard ISRO's heavy-lift LVM-3 rocket-nicknamed "Bahubali"-was cited by ISRO's leadership as a marker of the confidence international players now place in India's heavy-launch capabilities.

Strategic partnerships have deepened correspondingly, most notably with Russia, whose ROSCOSMOS space agency has supported Gaganyaan under a 2018 memorandum of understanding, part of a long-standing collaborative relationship in human spaceflight technology.

Not Without Its Pressures

Analysts tracking the sector caution that India's space trajectory in 2026 is unfolding against a more contested backdrop than in previous years. Recent commentary from strategic affairs think-tanks has pointed to a shift toward what is being described as "civil-military fusion" in India's space strategy-partly shaped by recent security developments-alongside a push for greater strategic autonomy in space technology, telecommunications and supply chains. As orbital congestion grows globally, with both the Chinese space station and the International Space Station increasingly strained by densely packed satellite constellations, India's own space station ambitions are being framed not merely as a matter of national prestige, but as a question of securing sustainable, sovereign access to orbit over the long term.

The Bigger Picture

Taken together, the last few years mark a genuine inflexion point rather than incremental progress. India has moved from being primarily a cost-efficient launch provider and occasional headline-maker-Mangalyaan, Chandrayaan-2, Chandrayaan-3-to building the institutional scaffolding for a durable space power: a growing private sector, an expanding diplomatic footprint, deepening human spaceflight capability, and early groundwork for a permanent orbital presence. 

Gaganyaan's uncrewed test flight later this year will be an important marker of whether that scaffolding can bear the weight of its own ambitions. But the broader trend-of steadily building capability across exploration, human spaceflight, commercial enterprise and international partnership simultaneously, rather than sequentially-is what analysts increasingly point to when describing India's "giant strides" in the space sector.
