Srinagar, November 3 (TNA) Srinagar Lok Sabha MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi has resigned from Parliament with immediate effect, marking a major political development in Jammu and Kashmir.

In a letter addressed to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Mehdi tendered his resignation under Article 101(3)(b) of the Constitution and Rule 240 of the Lok Sabha’s Rules of Procedure. His resignation will take effect formally after it is accepted by the Speaker.

Quits National Conference

Mehdi also announced his resignation from the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference during a public gathering in Budgam. The announcement was made on the 26th death anniversary of his father, attracting a large gathering of supporters.

His decision is being viewed as a setback for the National Conference and the Omar Abdullah-led administration in Jammu and Kashmir.

Differences with Party Leadership

Mehdi has accused the party leadership of failing to implement key promises made during the 2024 Assembly elections. He has also criticised the party’s position on issues including Article 370, statehood, the release of prisoners and the protection of people’s rights.

He said he could not remain associated with what he described as a betrayal of the public mandate. Party leaders have not yet issued a detailed response to his resignation.

Srinagar Seat to Fall Vacant

The Srinagar Lok Sabha seat will become vacant once the Speaker accepts Mehdi’s resignation. Under election law, the Election Commission will subsequently decide the schedule for a by-election, subject to constitutional and statutory provisions.

The resignation is expected to intensify political debate within the National Conference and could lead to further realignments in Jammu and Kashmir politics.
