New Delhi, September 1 (TNA) Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday criticised the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh government over the alleged gang rape of a minor girl on a moving sleeper bus travelling from Greater Noida to Delhi.
Gandhi questioned the accountability of the Delhi Police under Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Uttar Pradesh Police under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. In a post on X, he said the Delhi-NCR had become unsafe for women and alleged that the girl was assaulted during a 47-kilometre journey without the police becoming aware of the incident.
According to police, the 16-year-old girl had boarded a sleeper bus in Greater Noida on a rainy night earlier this month. The bus driver and conductor allegedly assaulted her while the vehicle was moving and later abandoned her near Kashmere Gate in north Delhi.
The two accused have been arrested, and the bus has been seized for forensic examination. Police are using CCTV footage to reconstruct the bus’s route and determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged crime.
Rahul’s allegation
Gandhi said it was “astonishing” that neither the Noida Police nor the Delhi Police had any information about the incident while the bus travelled through the region. He alleged that there was little possibility of accountability under the current arrangements and said the case could also be covered up.
Police investigation
An FIR has been registered under provisions related to gang rape, kidnapping and assault. The accused were traced and arrested after police examined CCTV footage and other evidence, while the investigation remains underway. The case has triggered political criticism over women’s safety and the enforcement of security measures on public transport in the Delhi-NCR region.
