Mansa (Punjab), October 14 (TNA) Public anger has intensified in Mansa following the broad-daylight killing of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh alias Jhota, who was shot dead during a confrontation with a medical-store owner over the alleged sale of prohibited drugs.
The 45-year-old activist was reportedly livestreaming the confrontation when the accused, identified as chemist Ashwani Kumar, allegedly opened fire outside his shop in a busy market area on Tuesday. Four associates of Jhota were also injured in the firing, according to reports.
Jhota was known for campaigning against drug abuse and the alleged illegal sale of addictive medicines through chemist shops. He had reportedly confronted the shop owner after accusing him of selling synthetic drugs, commonly referred to as “chitta”, to an elderly man.
The killing triggered protests across Mansa. Supporters gathered outside the Civil Hospital, blocked roads and demanded justice, while shops in parts of the town remained shut in response to the incident. Protesters also objected to the handling of Jhota’s body and initially refused to allow the post-mortem examination and cremation.
Tensions escalated on Wednesday when an agitated mob allegedly vandalised and set fire to the accused’s medical shop. Authorities subsequently launched a demolition drive against alleged unauthorised constructions at Kumar’s residence and business premises.
Police have arrested Ashwani Kumar in connection with the shooting and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the confrontation. Officials are also examining the livestream and other video evidence to establish the sequence of events.
The incident has sparked a political backlash in Punjab, with Opposition leaders accusing the ruling Aam Aadmi Party government of failing to control the drug trade and maintain law and order. The killing has also intensified questions over the safety of activists campaigning against narcotics in the state.
A joint action committee formed after the murder has called for a Punjab bandh, while Jhota’s supporters have demanded strict action against everyone linked to the alleged drug network.
