New Delhi, August 24 (TNA) The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has stated that a new method of cyber fraud has emerged on social media under the guise of "rent a boyfriend." Cybercriminals are luring people with attractive posters and photos of young people on platforms like Instagram, Telegram, and Facebook.
Various packages are being offered, ranging from coffee meetings to movie dates and event companionship. Fraudsters offer packages ranging from ₹499 for a one-hour coffee meeting, ₹1,249 for a movie date, and up to ₹1,999 for an event or wedding companion. After initiating conversations through direct messages, they extort thousands of rupees via digital wallets or QR codes in the name of booking confirmation, security deposit, and advance payment. Once the money is received, the fraudsters block the victim.
In this scam, fake profiles are created using AI-generated images or images obtained from the internet. After gaining trust during conversations, the fraudsters can obtain personal information, phone numbers, and photos. These can also be used later for threats and blackmail.
Cyber experts have advised people to be cautious of online friendships and such attractive offers. One should not share private photos, personal information or money with any stranger. Suspicious links, QR codes or requests to download apps should also be ignored. If someone befriends you quickly and asks for personal information, pressures you to meet alone or asks for money, then this should be considered a red flag. If you become a victim of cyber fraud, it is advised to immediately call 1930 and lodge a complaint on the cybercrime portal.
