New Delhi, October 23 (TNA) Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Director General Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor has said that Indian and Chinese troops have faced off at several locations along the Line of Actual Control in Arunachal Pradesh, with some confrontations continuing.

Speaking at a felicitation ceremony in Rajasthan’s Alwar on Thursday, Kapoor said, “Recently, a situation developed in Arunachal Pradesh where face-offs took place at several locations, and some of these situations are still ongoing.” He added that ITBP’s Shaurya Commando teams deployed in the area had performed exceptionally well.

The remarks mark one of the clearest recent confirmations by a senior Indian security official of continuing tensions along the Arunachal Pradesh sector of the India-China border. The ITBP is responsible for guarding and patrolling the LAC in coordination with the Army.

Shaurya units deployed

Kapoor said the ITBP had raised a new combat formation known as the Shaurya commandos. The unit was created to strengthen the force’s capabilities in high-altitude areas and to respond to potential confrontations along the border.

The ITBP chief also emphasised the force’s transition from its earlier mountain-guerilla role to that of a modern high-altitude border force. The new units are expected to support surveillance, rapid response and operations in difficult terrain.

The reported face-offs come amid broader efforts by India and China to manage tensions along the LAC through military and diplomatic channels. Officials have not disclosed the precise locations, duration or nature of the latest encounters, and there has been no immediate detailed response from Beijing.

Political reaction

The remarks triggered a political debate in India, with Congress leader Jairam Ramesh questioning the government’s handling of the situation and asking why the reported face-offs had not been publicly disclosed earlier.

The ITBP later removed a video of Kapoor’s remarks from its social-media account, according to reports, adding to questions over the communication of sensitive border developments.

Government and security officials have not indicated any escalation into armed clashes. The situation remains under close observation, with Indian forces maintaining heightened vigilance along the Arunachal Pradesh frontier.
