Lawngtlai, September 6 (TNA) Authorities in Lawngtlai have announced that refugees and foreign nationals will no longer be permitted to rent houses within Lawngtlai town, effective this September.
The decision was finalised during a law and order meeting chaired by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) on August 31.
The move aims to ensure public safety and uphold legal compliance within the district. The implementation of this new regulation will be a joint effort between the District Administration, Village Councils, the Young Lai Association (YLA), and the Police.
Under the new guidelines, every locality is required to maintain a systematic record of the movement of foreign nationals and refugees. Additionally, while many refugees seek daily wage labour, the meeting resolved that local village authorities must conduct thorough background checks before issuing any work permits.
According to the latest government data, Lawngtlai District currently hosts 7,425 refugees. Out of these, 6,064 are from Myanmar, while 1,361 have entered from Bangladesh.
