New Delhi, September 4 (TNA) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over Delhi on Friday, warning of intense showers accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds as a fresh monsoon trough continues to dump rain over the national capital and adjoining parts of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.
Along with Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad in western Uttar Pradesh were placed under an orange warning for heavy rain, with several areas in the National Capital Region (NCR) experiencing a sharp downpour that led to waterlogging on roads and disruption to morning traffic.
According to the IMD, isolated pockets in east, central, north-east, south, south-west, west, north-west and north Delhi are likely to see heavy to very heavy rainfall during the day, with wind speeds of 30–40 km/h possible during thunder activity. The weather agency has maintained a heavy rain warning for Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh from September 2 to 5, with the most intense combination of rain, thunderstorms and lightning expected on September 3–4.
On the ground, many parts of Delhi and the NCR recorded moderate to heavy spells from early morning, with low-lying and poorly drained areas reporting water accumulation that slowed vehicles on key stretches, including major arterial roads and entry points to Delhi from Noida, Ghaziabad and Gurugram.
In Gurugram, locations such as Rajiv Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk and sections of NH-48 saw reduced speeds as rain intensified, while several sensitive spots in Delhi reported localised waterlogging.

The IMD has advised residents to remain alert, especially in urban flood-prone zones, and to avoid unnecessary travel during peak rainfall hours. Authorities have been put on high alert to manage drainage, clear choke points and respond quickly to complaints of waterlogging and tree falls.
With the monsoon axis expected to remain active over the region for at least the next 24 hours, the possibility of intermittent heavy showers and thunder activity continues through Friday, with a yellow alert in place for light to moderate rain at many places on Saturday as well.
