Chennai, October 18 (TNA) Heavy rain lashed Chennai on Sunday, affecting normal life and causing waterlogging in several low-lying parts of the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast further rain, thunderstorms and lightning in Chennai and neighbouring districts.

North Chennai reportedly received some of the heaviest showers, while several roads and residential areas experienced water accumulation. Authorities were monitoring vulnerable locations and reviewing arrangements for emergency response and drainage management.

The IMD forecast isolated heavy rain over Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram districts. Isolated heavy to very heavy rain was also expected over Chengalpattu, according to the department’s latest warning.

The weather activity has been attributed to an atmospheric circulation over north Tamil Nadu and adjoining south coastal Andhra Pradesh. The system is expected to bring rain to several northern, western and central districts of Tamil Nadu.

Chennai is expected to remain generally cloudy, with heavy rain and thunderstorms accompanied by lightning. The city’s forecast showed temperatures of around 24°C to 32°C for the day. Emergency agencies have been placed on alert as the weather department warned of heavy rainfall across 17 districts of Tamil Nadu. Preparations by the National Disaster Response Force were also reviewed in view of the continuing rain.

Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during intense showers, exercise caution near waterlogged roads and stay indoors during lightning activity. Motorists were urged to drive slowly and avoid underpasses and other flood-prone stretches.

The IMD has forecast continued rain activity in parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and neighbouring regions over the coming days. Authorities are expected to issue further local advisories depending on rainfall intensity and water levels.
