New Delhi, October 31 (TNA) Delhi has recorded its wettest October in four years after persistent rain pushed the capital’s monthly rainfall total to 123.3 mm by 8:30 a.m. on October 30, according to weather data cited by the India Meteorological Department. The figure is the highest October rainfall total recorded in the city since 2022 and the fourth-highest for the month since 1954.

The capital received 61.4 mm of rain in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, making it the wettest October day in four years. The last higher single-day rainfall in October was recorded on October 9, 2022, when Safdarjung received about 74 mm.

Temperatures Plunge

Heavy rain and thunderstorms brought a sharp fall in temperatures across Delhi-NCR. The city recorded an unusually cold October day, with maximum temperatures dropping to around 20.7°C, according to weather reports.

The sudden change in weather forced residents to bring out warm clothing earlier than usual. Waterlogging and slow traffic were reported in several parts of the capital after intense overnight showers.

Air Quality Improves

The rainfall also brought temporary relief from Delhi’s pollution crisis. The average air-quality index for October was reported at 167, the lowest monthly average for the city since 2015, as rain helped settle dust and pollutants in the atmosphere.

Officials, however, cautioned that pollution levels could rise again once rainfall stops and calm conditions return. The improvement in air quality is therefore expected to depend largely on wind movement and further showers.

More Rain Forecast

The IMD issued alerts for additional rain, thunderstorms and lightning in parts of Delhi-NCR. Residents were advised to remain cautious during intense showers, avoid open areas during lightning and allow extra travel time because of waterlogging and traffic disruption.

With October rainfall already far above the normal monthly figure of 15.1 mm, the capital is witnessing an unusually wet and cold end to the month.
