New Delhi, September 1 (TNA) The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Tuesday informed the Supreme Court that it had withdrawn its proposed September 5 protest following developments regarding the closure of FIRs registered against students who participated in protests over the alleged NEET paper leak.
CJP co-convenor Saurav Das appeared before a bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana to communicate the decision. The party had planned a protest march in Delhi on Teachers’ Day, September 5.
During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta urged the Supreme Court to exercise its powers under Article 142 of the Constitution to quash FIRs filed against NEET protesters between July 20 and July 25 across the country.
Mehta told the bench that the Centre was committed to fulfilling assurances given to CJP leaders, including providing compensation to the families of students who died after the cancellation of the NEET examination. He sought three months to finalise the modalities for the compensation.
The development followed requests from Bihar, Assam, Maharashtra and West Bengal seeking the quashing of cases registered against students and protesters during the July agitation over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination.
The CJP had earlier accused the Centre of failing to honour assurances made on July 25, which had led the group to withdraw its 36-day agitation. The party is now expected to await compliance with the Supreme Court’s directions before deciding its future course of action.
