New Delhi, September 6 (TNA) A three-storey building collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area, close to Delhi University’s South Campus, on Sunday afternoon, sparking a large-scale rescue operation and fears that dozens of people, including university students, are trapped under the debris.
The incident took place near a Shiv Mandir in Satya Niketan, in southwest Delhi’s Moti Bagh area, around 1:30 pm. Delhi Fire Services said it received the first alert at about 1:33–1:34 pm, after which multiple fire stations, including Chanakyapuri, rushed teams to the spot. Specialised water tenders, basic fire tenders, water bowsers, an incident response team and quick-response vehicles have been deployed to clear the rubble and reach anyone pinned inside.
Local reports and an emergency press note issued by the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) said the collapsed structure housed a hostel and rented rooms, and that several Delhi University students were feared trapped. Some media outlets have cited initial fears that more than 50 students could be inside, though officials have not yet confirmed the exact number of occupants or casualties. So far, one person has been rescued alive from the debris, and the search for others is continuing.
Satya Niketan is a densely populated student neighbourhood next to DU’s South Campus, known for its private hostels and rented accommodations. Authorities are also securing the surrounding area and assessing risks to adjacent buildings as part of the emergency response. Rescue operations were still underway as reports came in, and official figures on deaths or injuries were yet to be confirmed.
