Shillong, September 2 (TNA) The Meghalaya BJP has indicated it would welcome the nine UDP MLAs if they decide to join the party, amid reports of their possible move to the BJP. Talking to reporters here on Tuesday, BJP chief spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang stopped short of confirming the reported talks with the party’s central leadership, but pointed to earlier indications that some sitting MLAs had approached the BJP.
The nine UDP legislators had recently met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and had said the discussions centred on the FCRA issue. Kharkrang said the FCRA matter was likely discussed, while other issues may also have figured in the meeting. He said the State BJP has so far received no official communication from the central leadership regarding the possible induction of the MLAs.
Kharkrang maintained that if negotiations are underway, they are still at an early stage and would involve consultations and discussions. He said the entry of sitting MLAs could strengthen the BJP with their political experience and networks, besides giving the party greater leverage on developmental issues in the State.
Kharkrang also said any such political realignment would form part of the BJP’s preparations for the 2028 Assembly elections.
