Mumbai, September 28 (TNA) Indian equity markets ended sharply lower on Monday, with the Sensex falling more than 1,000 points and the Nifty 50 settling below the 22,850 mark amid broad-based selling pressure. The sell-off was driven by concerns over rising crude oil prices, stalled US-Iran talks and continued pressure from global bond yields.

The 30-share BSE Sensex closed at around 72,862, down approximately 1,034 points, or 1.40 per cent, from its previous close. The NSE Nifty 50 ended near 22,823, declining about 317 points, or 1.37 per cent.

Banking and financial stocks were among the major losers, with the Nifty Bank index falling nearly 1.8 per cent. Broader markets also weakened, as the Nifty MidCap and SmallCap indices declined amid heavy selling across sectors.

Investors remained cautious as Brent crude prices rose above $100 a barrel amid heightened tensions in West Asia. Higher oil prices raised concerns over inflation, corporate margins and India’s import bill.

Market sentiment was further affected by foreign fund outflows and weakness across global equities. The India VIX, a gauge of market volatility, also rose sharply during the session, reflecting increased investor uncertainty.

Monday’s decline marked a broad-based retreat, with most sectoral indices closing in the red. Analysts said investors would closely track crude oil prices, geopolitical developments and upcoming global economic cues for the market’s next direction.
