New Delhi, August 22 (TNA) Onion prices have risen sharply across India, with wholesale rates climbing by as much as 40% in a week in some markets, adding fresh pressure on household budgets.

According to market data and trade reports, the all-India average retail price of onion stood at Rs 40.72 per kg, while some major cities saw rates in the Rs 50-60 range. In several places, prices have moved up from around Rs 25-30 per kg to Rs 55-60 per kg, reflecting a sudden spike in market rates.

Wholesale prices at Lasalgaon, one of the country’s key onion trading hubs, have also surged in recent days, with traders linking the rise to delayed arrivals of the kharif crop and disruptions caused by weather conditions.

Market pressure

The price jump comes at a time when onion stocks are tightening ahead of the festive season, raising concerns of further retail inflation if supply does not improve soon. Officials are expected to use buffer-stock sales to cool prices, but traders say the trend will depend on the pace of new crop arrivals and rainfall conditions in the coming weeks.

Why it matters

Onion is a key kitchen staple in Indian households, so even a short-lived rise can quickly affect daily food expenses. The latest spike also adds to broader food inflation concerns, as households continue to face volatile prices in essential items.
