LUCKNOW || Tightening screws on the big fish, high n’ mighty power defaulters, the Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday ordered the power department to first claim the arrears from ministers, senior officials, bureaucrats of the state government and office bearers of the ruling party.
Informing of this, state’s power minister Srikant Sharma said that from November 15, the state government would install pre-paid metres at houses of such people. The start of the scheme would be done from his own residence he announced.
The minister also admitted that the track record of the powerful politicians and bureaucrats in paying bills was not good and that the present BJP government in the state intended to reverse it.
Sharma further added that the pre-paid metres would be installed first in such government houses and pointed out that one lakh such smart pre-paid metres had already been ordered. “We are planning to install prepaid smart meters for electricity consumption from 15 November. We will begin this from the residence of officials, elected representatives and Ministers. Our intention is to make electricity affordable for everyone” he added.
The official, ministers, state government departments owe a staggering Rs 13000 crores as electricity bills to the power department. The big fish defaulters have been given an option of phased payments within a stipulated timeframe.
