Bye-Poll Schedule Announced For Rajya Sabha Seat From UP That Fell Vacant Due To Amar Singh's Demise

LUCKNOW || The Election Commission of India on Friday announced the bye-election schedule for the lone Rajya Sabha seat that fell vacant due to the demise of sitting member from Uttar Pradesh, Amar Singh. The 64-year-old leader died at a Singapore medical facility on August 1 after a prolonged retail ailment.

His tenure was to end July 4, 2022. "The Commission has decided to hold bye-election to the Council of States from Uttar Pradesh to fill up the above said vacancy" the poll panel said in a statement.

The notification for the bye poll will be held on August 25, the last date of filing nominations has been fixed for September 1 and the scrutiny of the nomination papers would be done on September 2.

The last date for withdrawal of candidatures is September 4 while the date of polling would be on September 11. The votes would be cast between 9:00 am to 4:00 pm and the counting of votes will be done at 5 pm on September 11.

The entire election process shall be completed by September 14. The Election Commission has directed the UP chief secretary to "depute a senior officer from the state to ensure that the extant instructions regarding COVID-19 containment measures are complied with while making arrangements for conducting the election."
