UP Cabinet Okays 218 Fast Track Courts To Try Rape Cases

LUCKNOW || Facing public ire on growing crimes against girls and women in the state, the Uttar Pradesh government has approved the setting up of 218 fast track courts, it was informed on Monday.

A decision to this effect was taken by the state cabinet at a meeting chaired by chief minister Yogi Adityanath. Law and Justice Minister Brajesh Pathak informed the media that these 218 fast track courts will be responsible for handling only rape cases.

Of these 74 courts will deal with cases related to minors and 144 courts to handle rape cases of adults.

There has been a spate of rape cases in the state of Uttar Pradesh in the past few months, with Unnao, neighbouring the state capital Lucknow topping the infamy charts with 89 reported rape cases in the last one year.

Opposition parties have been baying for the blood of the BJP government, accusing it of failing to protect the girls and women of the state.
