LUCKNOW || Hours after the Unnao rape victim died of a cardiac arrest in New Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital, her family members demanded death penalty for the five accused of raping her and then setting her on fire. “I really have no words….but our only demand is that the perpetrators of the heinous crime be handed out death sentence“, the brother of the deceased told reporters in Unnao on Saturday.
“My sister is no more and that has plunged us into sorrow, I hope and wish justice would be done“, he said further. The 25-year-old who was going to testify against her rapists in court was set on fire on the way by the accused. She is reported to have run for more than a km, her body ablaze before she slumped into a heap of smouldering flesh.
The incident, coming after a similar incident in Hyderabad where a vet was at first gang-raped and then torched by four assailants, who were later shot dead in an alleged encounter by the Telangana police on Friday, sending shockwaves in the state of Uttar Pradesh and elsewhere.
The opposition has blamed the “poor law and order” in UP under the watch of chief minister Yogi Adityanath for the spiralling crimes against women.
Meanwhile, after the death of the rape victim, the Uttar Pradesh DGP OP Singh has said that the police would try and expedite the judicial process and ensure that all the five accused are convicted and are sent to the gallows.
