Seven-time UP Legislator Bhagwati Singh Passes Away At 98

LUCKNOW || Seven-time legislator in Uttar Pradesh Bhagwati Singh Visharad passed away on Monday. He was 98. He was elected seven times from Bhagwant Nagar assembly seat in Unnao. According to reports, he died in Dhankutti, Kanpur and now his mortal remains are being brought to Unnao.

A venerated social worker, he commanded a lot of respect in the area he represented. He also participated in the freedom struggle against British rule. While alive and in his senses, he had donated his body and so there will be no cremation, a family source said. He is survived by his two sons and a big family.

He represented the Praja Socialist Party in the second Vidhan Sabha of Uttar Pradesh in 1957 for the first time. He was elected to the UP assembly for seven times – 1957, 1962, 1967 (as PSP candidate) and in 1969, 1974, 1977, 1980, 1985, 1989 and 1991 as Congress candidate. After his 1991 win, he withdrew from active politics, blaming modern politicians of not being social workers with interest of people in mind but people who take it as a mere profession.
