LUCKNOW || Social activist Sadaf Jafar and retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer SR Darapuri, who was sent to prison by Lucknow police during the CAA protests, was released from the jail on Tuesday. They walked out of the jail after the Lucknow Sessions Court granted them bail.
Police had arrested them on December 19 and 20 respectively from Lucknow but failed to produce any evidence of their involvement in the violence. SR Darapuri spoke to news reporters soon after his release and vowed to continue the struggle against the “current nizam (government)” for its wrongful acts.
“It is a matter of shame how brutally people were detained and beaten up at Hazratganj and Hussainganj police station in Lucknow. Even the women were beaten up in the presence of SSP. He should be ashamed of himself,” the retired police officer said.
The release got a political overtone as Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Tweeted: “Ambedkarite thinker and former IPS SR Darapuri and Congress leader Sadaf Jafar have been released from jail today. The UP Police could not produce evidence against them when asked by the court. By arresting innocent people and also those who are taking forward the principles laid down by Baba Saheb (Ambedkar), the BJP has shown it’s true face, however, a lie can never win.”
