MEERUT || Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were stopped on Tuesday from entering the violence-hit Meerut town of Uttar Pradesh. The Gandhi siblings were headed to meet the families of the persons killed in last week’s violence over the Citizenship Act.
Around six people were killed in protests at Meerut alone. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were told by the police reportedly told the Congress leaders that they cannot visit Meerut due to prohibitory orders, under section 144 which bans gathering of more than four persons in public places.
“We asked the police if they have any order, they didn’t show us any order but they just said you can please go back,” Rahul Gandhi later told reporters.
