Protest Against Citizenship Law Turns Ugly At AMU, Varsity Shut Down

ALIGARH || Protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) turned violent at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in Aligarh district of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday. This lead to tear gas shelling and cane charge by the police. The varsity meanwhile preponed the winter vacations by a week and the AMU will now open only on January 5.

The Internet has been shut down for 24-hours, beginning 10 pm on Sunday as per orders of district magistrate (DM), Chandra Bhooshan Singh. Earlier hundreds of students came out of the campus following the rumours that two students were shot in police firing at Jamia Millia Islamia campus in Delhi during protests against CAA.

Senior police and home department officials on Sunday said that the situation was under control and assured that no one will be allowed to take law in their hands. Police also said that miscreants had mixed up with the students and tried to create violence.
