LUCKNOW || Congress general secretary, in-charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday infused zeal and energy in the moribund party set up as she led hundreds and thousands of party workers in a march in the state capital.
According to conservative estimates, more than 10,000 party workers, supporters and common people joined the march which began from the Shaheed Smarak and concluded at the GPO where Priyanka Gandhi garlanded the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, whose 150th birth anniversary is being observed across the country.
Walking, waving and smiling all the way, the Congress leader spoke to reporters briefly and said that before uttering the name of Mahatma Gandhi, who was an apostle of peace an non-violence, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) should start speaking the truth.
Citing many incidents of atrocities on Dalits, marginalised sections of the society and women, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said that BJP should tread the path of truthfulness, honesty and work for the people rather than just uttering the name Mahatma.
Informed sources said that she was running a high fever for the past two days but she did not let this show and was cheerful in meeting party workers. She was initially supposed to drive down to the UPCC office at Mall Avenue but she skipped the event as the permission time given by the district administration had lapsed by then.
She left for the airport from the GPO with a promise to the workers to return soon and carry on the fight against the “oppressive BJP government in the state”.
