LUCKNOW || The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday issued a notice to the UP chief secretary RK Tiwari on the complaint of police excesses on protestors against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Congress general secretary in-charge of UP, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra a few days back had knocked the doors of the human rights panel, seeking its intervention.
The NHRC has given six weeks to the top bureaucrat to respond to its notice. 18 persons were killed across the state in the stir against CAA after violent protests erupted in some parts of the state. Congress has alleged that police were brutal in dealing with the protestors and this led to the loss of innocent lives.
Congress has bene vocal and pro-active on the issue and has been taking it up at all possible forums. The Congress leadership, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, have also visited the bereaved families in Varanasi, Bijnore and Meerut.
