LUCKNOW || The death of Unnao rape victim stirred up a political storm in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday. Political leaders in their own ways slammed the state government for its abject failure in controlling crimes, especially against women. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati, who till now generally only issued statements and Tweeted on Saturday leapt into the political arena and drove to the Raj Bhawan.
The four-time Uttar Pradesh chief minister met governor Anandiben Patel and submitted a memorandum over the spiralling crimes against women. She also called for the intervention of the governor on the sensitive issue while also charging the state’s BJP government of protecting and patronising the criminals behind the heart-wrenching incident.
Later talking to reporters, the Dalit leader said the UP governor herself is a woman and so she should be more alive to such criminal acts and intervene. States is in throes of lawlessness and rapes and other crimes against women are rampant under the watch of chief minister Yogi Adityanath, she said while also pointing out how police failed to protect the rape victim.
Had the police discharged its duty well, this kind of incident could have been avoided… Women in search of justice and protection are being murdered, threatened and set ablaze…it is something which has shaken the people not only in Uttar Pradesh but also the entire country, Mayawati stated further.
