NEW DELHI || Following a Supreme Court ruling that women will get an equal stake in the forces, now Major Madhuri Kanitkar has become the third Lieutenant General who now has been promoted to the post. Madhuri became the third woman of the Indian Armed Force to become Lieutenant General.
Before this there was Surgeon, Vice Admiral and former Three Star Flag Officer of the Indian Navy, Dr Punita Arora posted on the post of Lieutenant General. The other was Air Marshal Padmavati Bandopadhyay, an Air Force woman who was second to be promoted.
Madhuri is now posted in the Integrated Defence Staff in the Army Head Quarters, which comes under the Chief of Defence. Madhuri has had a prolific career. He has served as the former dean of Armed Forces Medical College, Pune. Her husband Rajiv is also a lieutenant.
She was promoted on February 29 after the historic decision of the Supreme Court to give command postings to women in the Army.
