Mainpuri SP Transferred For Delay In Navodaya Student’s Death Probe

LUCKNOW || Angry at the slow pace of investigations in the suspicious death of a girl student at the Navoday Vidyalaya hostel in Mainpuri more than two months back, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has transferred the district police chief Ajay Shankar Rai and he has been attached to the DGP office. A departmental enquiry against the Mainpuri SP has simultaneously been ordered, an official informed on Monday.

A three-member special investigation team (SIT) will now probe the death further. The state government has also decided to send a reminder to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take up the case. More than two months back, Anushka, daughter of Bhogaon resident Santosh Pandey was found dead under suspicious circumstances in the college hostel.

The 16-year-old was a class XI student and her body was found hanging from the ceiling fan on September 16.

Her family alleged that she had been strangulated and then hung to the ceiling fan. There were many injury marks on her body as well. The ‘panchanama’ has reported these injuries but the post-mortem report did not speak of any such injuries. A DNA test was also conducted on the accused student, who parents of the victim alleged had killed her.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had recently written to the UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath, seeking his intervention in the case, which had been pending for long. UP government has now removed the SP of Mainpuri and posted Shamli SP Ajay Kumar as the new district police chief.
