NEW DELHI || Justice finally was given to the family of late Nirbhaya, the girl who was gang-raped and brutally assaulted in 2013 in New Delhi and killed, in the wee hours of Friday, as her rapists were hung at the Tihar jail in the union capital. All the four accused were hung together by Pawan Jallad, an official of the prison informed.
The family of the young medical student who was gang-raped and tortured on a moving bus in Delhi finally heaved a sigh of relief and her mother said justice had been meted to them. Thanking the judiciary and the government’s involvement in ensuring that the killers didn’t get to use the lacunae in the laws to further delay their death sentence from being executed.
The hanging was done less than two hours after the Supreme Court (SC) dismissed their final petition. In the hours before that, the convicts had petitioned the Delhi High Court, where their lawyer cited coronavirus for the lack of proper documents with the hurriedly filed appeal.
A third court had already declared that they had run out of all legal options of stopping their execution. As Akshay Thakur (31), Pawan Gupta (25), Vinay Sharma (26) and Mukesh Singh (32), were hanged at Tihar Jail in Delhi, where they had spent the last few hours in isolation.
This is the first time in the history of India that four convicts were hanged at the same time.
