MUMBAI || The most popular Ganpati mandal in Mumbai that drew millions every year during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival – Lalbaugcha Raja, has been cancelled by its organisers due to the spread of Coronavirus in India’s commercial capital, officials said on Wednesday.
This is sadly the first time in Lalbaugcha Raja’s illustrious 84-year history when the event has been cancelled. “This year we will not be keeping any idol as people will otherwise throng to see it,” said Sudhir Salvi, secretary of the Lalbaug Ganesh Mandal.
The organisers said they will instead arrange a blood donation and plasma therapy camp for the duration of the festival.
On Wednesday, for the first time in three days since the coronavirus disease spread in Maharashtra, the state recorded less than 5,000 cases. Mumbai also recorded less than 1,000 cases.
