Mumbai, September 23 (TNA)  Indian equity markets ended higher on Wednesday, September 23, with the benchmark indices extending their gains from early trade. The Sensex rose 299.17 points, or 0.40 per cent, to close at 74,828.25, while the Nifty 50 gained 117.80 points to finish near 23,450.

Buying was led by metal, banking and broader-market stocks, while weakness in information technology shares capped the overall gains. Crude oil prices remaining below the $100-per-barrel mark also eased some pressure on India, one of the world’s major oil-importing economies.

Among the major movers, ITC gained around 2 per cent after the company raised prices of select cigarette brands. Financial and metal stocks also attracted buying interest during the session. Bajaj Finance, Hindalco and Tata Steel were among the notable gainers.

The IT sector remained under pressure, with HCL Technologies, Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services among the stocks that declined. The Nifty IT index fell around 0.73 per cent, according to market data.

Market sentiment was also influenced by global cues, crude oil prices, US bond yields and continued foreign portfolio investor selling. Investors remained cautious amid geopolitical uncertainty and concerns over global liquidity.

The broader market ended on a positive note, with advancing stocks outnumbering declining shares. Analysts said volatility could remain elevated in the coming sessions as investors track overseas developments, institutional fund flows and movements in the rupee.
