Chennai, October 14 (TNA) Rain lashed several parts of Chennai on Wednesday, bringing relief from the prevailing heat but disrupting normal life in some areas. The India Meteorological Department forecast moderate rain in parts of the city, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
The weather remained cloudy as intermittent showers continued across Chennai and neighbouring districts. The IMD’s district forecast indicated a moderate intensity of rain in Chennai, with showers likely at several places during the day.
Rainfall activity was also reported in adjoining districts, including Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram. The weather department advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid exposed areas during lightning activity.
The rain came as the southwest monsoon began withdrawing from parts of the country and conditions became favourable for the northeast monsoon to commence over the southern peninsula, most likely around October 15.
The IMD separately issued a warning of heavy rain at isolated places in Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts. Thunderstorms and lightning were also likely at one or two places in these districts.
Authorities have advised motorists to exercise caution on waterlogged or slippery roads and urged residents to follow updates from the weather department. Localised flooding and traffic disruptions cannot be ruled out if the showers intensify during the afternoon and evening.
