Ongole, November 3 (TNA) Severe Cyclonic Storm Murasu began making landfall along the south Andhra Pradesh coast in the early hours of Tuesday, bringing winds of up to 120 kmph and heavy rain to coastal districts.
The India Meteorological Department said the cyclone’s eye touched the coast between Nellore and Narsapur, close to Ongole. The landfall process was expected to continue for several hours as the system moved inland.
Heavy Rain and Strong Winds
The cyclone brought sustained winds of around 100–110 kmph, with gusts reaching 120 kmph along and off the coast. Several areas in Andhra Pradesh reported heavy rain and squally conditions as the storm crossed the shoreline.
The IMD has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh on November 3 and 4. Districts including Eluru, Krishna, NTR, West Godavari, Guntur and Bapatla are likely to receive significant rainfall.
Authorities on Alert
The Andhra Pradesh government had moved residents from vulnerable coastal and low-lying areas to safer locations ahead of the cyclone. Disaster-response teams, police personnel and medical staff were deployed in districts expected to experience the strongest winds and rain.
Officials monitored possible flooding, fallen trees, damage to power lines, and disruptions to roads and communications. Fishermen had been advised not to venture into the sea, while residents were asked to remain indoors and follow official advisories.
Flights and Transport Affected
The cyclone disrupted transport services in the region, with several flights cancelled or rescheduled. Road and rail services were also being monitored as the storm moved inland and rain intensified across neighbouring districts.
