New York, September 15 (TNA) Two Indian-origin young adults, Mallika Chitre and Navam Kaul, were killed after being struck by a train at a subway station in New York City early Sunday, according to local reports.
The incident occurred at around 3:15 a.m. at the Spring Street station in downtown Manhattan, when a No. 4 train approached the tracks where the two were reportedly sitting. The train operator told officials that he saw them and attempted to stop the train, but the emergency brakes could not halt it in time.
Emergency responders found both victims trapped beneath the train and pronounced them dead at the scene. Around 100 passengers were later evacuated safely from the train.
Investigation Underway
Police are investigating the circumstances that led the two young adults to be on the tracks. Reports said it was not immediately clear whether Kaul had fallen onto the tracks or had entered them, while Chitre was reportedly seen near him shortly before the collision.
Investigators have not recovered a suicide note and have not ruled out any possible explanation, including whether alcohol or another factor may have impaired the victims’ awareness of the approaching train. Authorities have not yet released further details.
Rutgers Graduates
According to information cited in the reports, Chitre and Kaul were longtime friends and graduated from Rutgers University in New Jersey in 2024. The New York Police Department’s investigation remains ongoing.
