Washington, August 28 (TNA) President Donald Trump has ordered Lake Ontario to be renamed "Lake America" as he escalates his trade war with Canada, sparking immediate pushback from Ottawa. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the change, insisting that Canadians will continue to call it Lake Ontario, emphasising its long Indigenous and historical roots.
The proposed renaming sparked reactions across Canada, with several citizens and political leaders dismissing the move. The volatile US leader's move comes after U.S.-Canada trade talks collapsed last week, prompting the two longtime allies to slap tit-for-tat tariffs on each other.
President Trump said, "And finally, guess the purpose of this, more than anything else, is we're going to be changing the name of Lake Ontario, effective immediately, to Lake America. That's going to take place right now as I sign the order."
"And we filed all the necessary papers, documents, everything else. We notified all of the various people that we have to notify. So we've done everything that you have to do. And this is official. Effective immediately," the President added.
